Supercapacitor energy-recovery stations
Braking energy is stored and returned when vehicles pull away.
The heroes of this project are energy-recovery stations built on supercapacitors. They capture the surplus energy produced when traction vehicles brake and return it when they pull away. They can also multiply the output of low-power sources such as photovoltaic plants for short periods.
At the heart of each station is a bank of series-connected supercapacitors. It handles large charge and discharge currents and survives roughly a thousand times more cycles than batteries.
